Ann Patchett and Book Touring

by Jeff Abbott on August 3, 2008

Ann Patchett writes about the joys and sorrows of book touring in an essay in the new Atlantic Monthly. It was fascinating reading after my two weeks on the road.
I don’t find touring quite as difficult as she does (perhaps because I actually used to be a traveling salesman many years ago, having to roam about two weeks a month) but I do agree with her that it’s far worse not to tour than to tour. I enjoy a lot about touring: getting to meet readers, hear their feedback, answer their questions, and getting to talk with booksellers. But that said, I am glad to be home with my family, and glad to be writing, which is how I hope readers want me to spend most of my time.
