Are You Still Buying Books?

by Jeff Abbott on October 17, 2008

Agent Nathan Bransford asks on his blog if the downturn has affected book buying. It was heartening to see that many of his commenters said they were still buying as many books as they normally do (although many, understandably, are not). I have a love for hardbacks and I’ve bought a lot of books this year, but will probably slow down just because I’d like to read the ones I have before I add more to the pile. (My to-be-read pile has its own gravitational force, it’s gotten so big.) But when one of my favorite authors is out with a new book, absolutely, I’m there. I want to support them and give them a vote with my wallet.
Even if I had eliminate my own book buying, I would still buy books for my kids. That’s non-negotiable.

My book buying had slowed down since I’m trying to read through the 30 fiction paperbacks and handful of non-fiction books that I got on the shelf right now. Once I clear out that backlog, I’ll start ordering some of the 30 books in my Amazon shopping cart.

I don’t currently plan to cut back on my book buying. I need the entertainment to distract me from the gloom and doom. :)

I noticed something at the book sales at the Romance Writers of America meeting in Austin I spoke to this week, where a B&N kindly handled the book sales–lots of books sold for Christmas gifts (or so the buyers told me, or I was asked to inscribe “Merry Christmas” to the recipient). A signed book (esp. a hardback) is a great gift for a reader. And they’re easy to wrap.

For every birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, etc. I ask for gift cards to bookstores – that way I have a guilt-free way to get my books. Now if I could just find a way to store them better!
I thoroughly enjoyed your talk at the ARWA meeting last week, Jeff, and am trying to put it to good use in my wip. I picked up Panic at the meeting and couldn’t put it down. Guess I have to break out the gift cards and go get Collision now!
