Your Favorite Irritating Phrases

by Jeff Abbott on November 9, 2008

Researches at Oxford University have compiled a list of the most irritating phrases, including winners “at the end of the day”, “fairly unique”, and “I personally”. What, there was no room for “So I was like?” and “He was all like. . .” Oh, this is a British list, perhaps they don’t suffer the plague of like.
I have to say “fairly unique” drives me mad. My other favorite is “To be honest with you. . .”–which always makes me think you’ve been lying to me up to that point. There are over two thousand comments at the end of this news report–no doubt you can find your most irritating phrase represented among those.

One of my favorite “irritating” phrases is “don’t take this the wrong way” because you know whatever follows it is almost guaranteed to be taken it the wrong way. :-)
