Death’s Excellent Vacation

by Jeff Abbott on August 3, 2010

My very first paranormal short story appears in a great new anthology hitting bookstores today, Death’s Excellent Vacation. Edited by Charlaine Harris (the megaselling author behind the Sookie Stackhouse books, the basis of HBO’s True Blood series) and the ever-energetic Toni L. P. Kelner, the collection focuses on what happens when summer holidays and the supernatural meet. Other contributors include Jeaniene Frost, Katie MacAlister, Daniel Stashower, Sharan Newman, Chris Grabenstein, Lilith Saintcrow, Sarah Smith, L. A. Banks, A. Lee Martinez, and Christopher Golden. If you’re a big fan of Charlaine’s books, the collection features a never-before-published Sookie Stackhouse story.

Now, I have never written anything that really touched on vampires, ghosts, werewolves, etc., and when Charlaine and Toni invited me to be a contributor, I was excited but a little bit nervous. I enjoy books about the supernatural but I haven’t tried to write one. Well, writing something entirely different from what I normally do was GREAT fun and I really enjoyed my walk on the dark side. My story is called “Safe and Sound”. Nora Dare is an obnoxious tabloid TV journalist. She has built her show’s huge ratings on her nonstop coverage of a missing person case–a young American man who vanished while vacationing in the Caribbean. When she decides to go chase the story down on the island where he disappeared, Nora learns nothing is as it seems.

The book is available at all retailers, online and brick. I hope you enjoy the collection. And thank you Charlaine and Toni for inviting me to participate.
